January 9 - The first steamboat, the New Orleans, arrives in New Orleans after a trip down the Mississippi River from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
March 14 - The first U.S. war bonds are sold.
April 8 - Louisiana is admitted to the Union as the 18th state.
April 30 - Louisiana is admitted to the Union as the 13th state.
May 12 - The first U.S. nominee to decline Vice Presidential candidacy is John Langdon.
June 18 - The U.S. declares war on Great Britain, and the War of 1812 begins.
July 19 - The British launch an unsuccessful attack on Sacketts Harbor, New York during the War of 1812.
August 19 - The American ship Constitution wins a naval battle against the British ship Guerriere.
October 13 - Queenstown, Canada is captured by U.S. troops, but recaptured the same day by the British.
October 22 - The first prisoners of the War of 1812 are captured at St. Regis, New York.
